Need help

I want to write a post heded: Ironic irony in which I point out pithily that conservatives decry ‘ironic detachment’ and lament that young people no longer embrace causes greater than themselves, their friends, and their possessions. Yet when the left coalesces with (some) enthusiasm behind an emphatically non-ironic and in-pursuit-of-something-bigger-than-any-of-us candidate, suddenly those values are worthy of mockery.

What I’m missing is links to articles in which conservatives decry ‘ironic detachment’ and so on. Any love?

iPhone Troubles a Thing of the Past

I’ve been slow with this post: The repaired phone came back, no problem, and has been working fine. The only irksome thing is this: When my wife had a similar problem, only worse — her whole screen went dead — and brought her unit to the Soho Apple Store, she was simply handed a new iPhone. No loaner, no fee. Grrrr.

iPhone Troubles Update

I now have a loaner iPhone from Apple — an 8GB model with “AppleCare Service” embossed on the back. So far, I’d say Apple’s performance has been decent, but far from exceptional.

iPhone Troubles

Saturday was the warmest day in New York since I bought my iPhone. It was also the day when my iPhone developed a dead zone.

That means that right now, my iPhone is one step away from being a $500 brick. I can receive calls — if the touchscreen is locked, that is — but I can’t make them. Nor can I send SMS, check my email, or use the Safari browser.

skyscraper

Calatrava’s fourth design iteration for the new Chicago spire has been approved by the city. It reminds me that the first time I ever saw a skyscraper was in Chicago. Bending my neck back and staring and getting vertigo type of skyscraper. Wow.

“We still have no clue how to make money in the new era, so we’ll bust the people who do.”

Maybe the RIAA can get the Bush Administration to name DJ Drama an “enemy combatant”.

The Best TV I’ve Seen in Ages

My old friends Ron and Zim have been turning me on to the BBC series TopGear.

They agreed on this 15-minute piece as the show’s best.

I could absolutely do without the last 1:30 — the studio stuff. In fact, I didn’t even watch the last :30 or so.

But the rest of it? Good Lord! I am convinced that it’s the best television I’ve seen in ages. The shooting is gorgeous (if occasionally rough), as are the editing, writing, and performances. It’s smart and funny and compelling as hell. A real revelation to me. I felt compelled to share.

I admit to taking boyish pleasure in watching cars get bashed about. But this piece rises way above that.

material culture and music, or boy how i miss record covers.

(cross-posted from http://syncretisthasablognow.blogspot.com/)

a few years ago – basically, within about 3 days of getting one of the first iPods – I decided to put my whole cd collection into a digital jukebox. I’m no dj shadow when it comes to record collecting, but even a fellow who’s just moderately interested in music can come up with a few thousand cds and records over the years without trying too hard. I made a project out of it, took a stack of cds in to work with me every day for like 6 weeks, and had my laptop convert them while I did my job.
